MATV Headend System Design
Headend System requirements differ for each location. TLE offers assistance in system design, layout, and product selection. Sample Headend diagram & description shown below.
Basic Info about the Headend should include ...
- Available broaddcast signals: list receivable channels from antenna location
- Additional RF signals: list other signals to include (e.g., vcr, camera, satellite receiver)
- Signal strength: measurements - antenna + FSM/ spectrum analyzer, or, estimated levels - contour maps, or, visual check - signal level vs. picture quality (using RF pads).
- Reception quality: Access need for preamplifiers, filters or traps ? Describe any reception difficulties (e.g., ghosting / noise / weak signal / overloading / adjacent channel interaction).
- Antenna network: describe quantity and types of antennas (see example below)
- Cable length & type: antenna down lead to headend equipment, e.g., 200 ft.RG-6U
- Channel lineup and frequency allocation: Channels to
be delivered to distribution system - VHF/UHF or CATV. Adjacent (e.g.,
2, 3, 4), or, Non-adjacent (e.g., 2, 4, 6)
(see freq chart) - One-way or two-way system: Using the sub-TV band (5 - 40 MHz) ?
- Signal output from headend and details of distribution system: To determine the signal level required from the Headend system, a basic description of the distribution system is needed - info to include: layout of complex, number of outlets and representative cable run lengths.
